I bought this based after quite a bit of research into these loft beds.
I was aware that top bunk mattress size can be a problem, the manufacturer website for this unit states it can accomodate "Twin Size Mattress - max 8.5 inch thick" (as of January 25, 2011).
We received the 180+ lb unit intact in a single box. It was actually pretty well packaged for something this large. We opened the box in the garage and carried the invidual pieces to my son's room for assembly (max individual piece maybe 40lbs), two people required due to bulk of the pieces.
I'm a pretty handy guy with all the correct tools (the provided allen key and wrench will work, but you'll need more time) and it took us about 2 hours to assemble (including some reassembly due to poor instructions):
